Synopsis

In “La Serpiente de Shelmeca”, Wildres Wood, the first biologist from the Miskitu ethnic group, embarks on a journey to the heart of the second most important rainforest in the Americas.

“For me as a woman and a filmmaker, it is important to tell the story of ‘La Serpiente de Shelmeca’ through its protagonist, seeking in this way to decolonize our narratives from her perspective, in which the true stories and ancestral traditions are lived,” explains filmmaker Laura Bermúdez.

“Wildres Wood is the first Miskitu biologist, her struggle, strength, passion and leadership motivate me to bring this story to the screen, because it is urgent to know the reality, that reality that endangers the second largest lung in America, the Biosphere of the Río Plátano.”

“La Serpiente de Shelmeca” is one of the two finalists for the Latin-American Prize for Short Film about Water and Science 2024, organized by Let’s Talk About Water and Mayors Make Movies.
