Let’s Talk About Water: Preserving Ancient Ice

Let’s Talk About Water is honoured to present Robert Flaherty’s landmark 1922 film, Nanook of the North, at the Cryosphere Pavilion during the United Nations Ocean Conference.

Nanook of the North is often credited as the first feature-length documentary. As we watch Nanook navigate a frozen world nearly a century ago, we are invited to ask: What meaning do ancient glaciers hold for us today—and what does their loss mean for our planet and humanity?

To explore these questions, we use the power of film and storytelling to open a conversation with the public about how we frame truth, memory, and climate through the moving image.

The film offers a lens into the Inuit relationship with the cryosphere—and prompts deeper questions about cultural resilience, climate change, and how storytelling can evolve to meet this moment.

We thank the Albedo Cryosphere Foundation for making this dialogue possible—bringing together scientists, policymakers, and the public to explore the tools we have for communicating climate realities during this International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation.
